FORTEAN BIRD NEWS FROM THE WATCHER OF THE SKIES
What has Corinna's column of Fortean bird news got to do with cryptozoology?
Well, everything, actually!
Well, everything, actually!
In an article for the first edition of Cryptozoology Bernard Heuvelmans wrote that cryptozoology is the study of 'unexpected animals' and following
on from that perfectly reasonable assertion, it seems to us that
whereas the study of out-of-place birds may not have the glamour of the
hunt for bigfoot or lake monsters, it is still a perfectly valid area
for the Fortean zoologist to be interested in.

I always like this time of the year; the winter is
just about over and as spring begins, I usually get
enthused with energy and positive vibes and produce a lot more than I would at other times of the year. This is probably a good thing, because there always seems to be a whole lot more to be done at this time of year than there is at other times, but whether this is a chicken and egg situation I am never too sure. There are, however, all sorts of things in the pipeline both with Gonzo, The CFZ, Wyrd and every other thing that I use to fill my life up. I am planning to start a library and a Wildlife have enough to do).

But as far as I am concerned, the universe sets you
challenges and if you rise to the occasion then your karma is immeasurably more
positive than it would be if you didn’t. But this week, probably because of the
young ladies upon whom I lavished my affections this week (two Stepsprogs and
two Grandsprogs) I am feeling remarkably chipper, and positive enough to meet
whatever the multiverse decides to throw in my direction. It probably won’t
last, but I cannot remember feeling as happy as I do now in a long
time.

FDA Finally Admits Chicken Meat Contains Cancer-Causing Arsenic
After years of sweeping the issue under the rug and hoping no one would notice, the FDA has now finally admitted that chicken meat sold in the USA contains arsenic, a cancer-causing toxic chemical that’s fatal in high doses. But the real story is where this arsenic comes from: It’s added to the chicken feed purposely!
Even worse, the FDA says its own research shows that the arsenic added to the chicken feed ends up in the chicken meat where it is consumed by humans. So for the last sixty years, American consumers who eat conventional chicken have been consuming arsenic, a known cancer-causing chemical.
Until this new study, both the poultry industry and the FDA denied that arsenic fed to chickens ended up in their meat. The fairy-tale excuse story we’ve all been fed for sixty years is that “the arsenic is excreted in the chicken feces.” There’s no scientific basis for making such a claim, it’s simply what the poultry industry wanted everybody to believe.
Now the evidence is so undeniable that the manufacturer of the chicken feed product known as Roxarsone has decided to pull the product off the shelves. Interestingly enough, the manufacturer that has been putting arsenic in the chicken feed for all these years is Pfizer — the very same company that makes vaccines containing chemical adjuvants that are injected into children.

CFZ IN THE NEWS: Tasmanian tiger trackers return to island state for new expedition
AN international team of Tasmanian tigers trackers is back in the island state for another expedition to find the fabled creature.
The group of naturalists, headed by Mike Williams, returned last week to search for the thylacine, which was officially declared extinct in the early 1980s.
The last captive thylacine died in Hobart Zoo in 1936.
Joining Mr Williams on his latest six-week search will be zoologists and thylacine hunters from Britain and Denmark.
The expedition is being run by the Centre for Fortean Zoology, based in the UK and Australia, which investigates “mystery animals” considered rare, extinct or undiscovered.
It will be the group’s second expedition after travelling south in October 2013.
But Mr Williams, from New South Wales, has personally been searching for the largest known carnivorous marsupial of modern times for more than a decade
“If someone said to me when I first started that 10 years on we would still be getting tips — our last one was a year ago — I wouldn’t have believed you,” he said.
“With the increase of people using crash (dashboard-mounted) cameras, we believe a local using one might be a good chance of stumbling across a thylacine while driving.”
The five-person team arrived in the state last week and has already been following up tips and speaking to people who claim they spotted the animal in the state’s north.
They will explore areas around northern Tasmania for about four weeks before shifting their focus to the state’s isolated south-west.
“Tasmania is recognised as one of the most biologically rich places on the planet, so it makes sense that the Tasmanian tiger could survive in remote parts of the state,” Mr Williams said.
FORTEAN ART TERRORISM: The latest from Xtul
The next three days were quite possibly the longest, and the most emotionally charged of my adult life. I have no biological children of my own, but after getting together with Corinna in the spring of 2005 I soon began to love her two daughter a if they were my own. By the time that we got married two and a bit years later, I was thinking of them AS my own, and to be honest I don't think that I could love either of them any more than I do, even if they had been my own flesh and blood.
Although I was terribly excited at the prospect of becoming a grandfather for the first time, I was also acutely conscious of the fact that I was the only person in the family who had a qualification in any of the medical sciences, and as my nursing qualification was to look after handicapped people, the only obstetrics that I knew anything about we abnormal ones, and although I tried to continually remind myself that the human race had been successfully giving birth for hundreds of thousands of years with a fair amount of success, I was only too aware of what could go wrong. The text from Aaron which had cheered and encouraged the others, had done the complete opposite to me, and I was frankly terrified. However I didn't want anyone else to know that so I kept my own council, and went outside for as many cigarettes as I truthfully thought that I could get away with.
Just outside the main entrance of the hospital was a huge, stainless steel doughnut shaped sculpture. There was an engraved brass plaque below it explaining what it was meant to symbolise, but it was so encrusted with pigeon shit as to be illegible. I assume that because it was positioned outside the main entrance to that part of the hospital which housed the Maternity Wing, that the huge doughnut was meant to symbolise the female reproductive tract, but even to my mind that seemed a little crass, and laid it open to all sorts of amusing nomenclature of which the Latin Cloaca Maxima was the least offensive.

CRYPTOLINK: 20-stone catfish caught with fishing rod
A word about cryptolinks: we are not responsible for the content of cryptolinks, which are merely links to outside articles that we think are interesting (sometimes for the wrong reasons), usually posted up without any comment whatsoever from me.
After staying in the water to weigh and measure the specimen, which is one of the largest ever caught, they released it back into the river to swim another day.

Enormous 20-stone catfish caught with fishing rod in Italy after 40-minute boat battle
Dino Ferrari told GrindTV that he and his brother, Dario, lured it in with artificial bait and then battled the giant fish from their small boat for 40 minutes on Thursday.
The wels catfish, which was set free, could be one of the largest ever caught.

THE GONZO BLOG DOO-DAH MAN IS DUE TO RETURN
The Gonzo Daily - Wednesday

www.gonzomultimedia.co.uk/about.html
Graham's on the last lap of blog cover, as Jon and Corinna are due to return today.
The electricity supply around here has been stable, the last 24 hours... what a surprise! Actually, what did surprise me the other day was to find out that power cuts aren't anything to do with the regional electricity company. These days, all they do is read the meter and charge you for what you've used, and they have no other means of even finding out who's receiving power and who isn't. No, it's the distribution network that is in charge of the supply side of things.
So it's the same set-up as with the UK's railway 'system' then. Fragmented.
Anyway, on to the site updates... and an apology for omitting to include Track of the Day in yesterday's notifications:

TODAY'S BIG CAT NEWS
The hunt for British Big Cats attracts far more newspaper-column inches than any other cryptozoological subject.
There are so many of them now that we feel that they should be archived by us in some way, so we are publishing a regular round-up of the stories as they come in.
The worldwide mystery cat phenomenon (or group of phenomena, if we are to be more accurate) is not JUST about cryptozoology. At its most basic level it is about the relationship between our species and various species of larger cat. That is why sometimes you will read stories here that appear to have nothing to do with cryptozoology but have everything to do with human/big cat interaction. As committed Forteans, we believe that until we understand the nature of these interactions, we have no hope of understanding the truth that we are seeking.

NEWS FROM NOWHERE - Thursday
ON THIS DAY IN 1955 - Billboard magazine reported that the 45 rpm single was outselling the 'wax' 78 rpm format for the first time.
That's a bit of a technological landmark... but it's funny to think that today's computer disk drives aren't so very different to the 78 rpm records. They are both random access spinning disks.
And now the later news...

THE GONZO BLOG DOO-DAH MAN IS MISSING ALL THE POWER-CUTS
The Gonzo Daily - Wednesday
www.gonzomultimedia.co.uk/about.html
www.gonzomultimedia.co.uk/about.html
Graham's still on the blogging trail, in the absence of Jon and Corinna.
Perhaps it's just as well Jon's not around, really. Yesterday I commented on the hindrance of three power outages that occurred on Monday. Well, shortly after making that remark, Tuesday saw a further SIX outages. The fourth happened while I was up at our local shop, and after the power came back on, I had to wait while the electronic tills recovered and reconnected to the internet. As I keyed in the security number for my bank card, I commented that I'd better hurry up before the electricity glitched off again.
As it was, it was on my way home that all the
street lights and illuminated house windows went dark. Phoning up the power
distribution people, I was told a digger (backhoe) had taken out a cable, and
various attempts at re-routing the supply were being made.
And today? Well, we've just had THREE outages so
far. So I'll press on with the site updates while I'm able to! -

BIGFOOT NEWS IN BRIEF
A new clip for the UK release of Eduardo Sánchez’s Exists gives a glimpse of a particular incarnation of the cryotozoological beastie that isn’t to be trifled with.
The film will be hitting UK DVD on April 6 courtesy of Entertainment One.
Synopsis:
When a group of friends head into the remote Texas woods for a weekend of non-stop partying, their car hits a huge mysterious animal, which quickly disappears back into the darkness. But as the gang arrives at an isolated cabin, one of them realizes that the woods are home to a bloodthirsty Bigfoot, and it’s only a matter of time before he seeks them out. Soon enough, their weekend trip turns into a terrifying ordeal of survival of the fittest…

Chupacabra: a legend or real-life monster? - KOB4 T V (New Mexico) takes a look
If your ears perk up when you hear the word 'chupacabra', you're not alone. KOB sat down with a New Mexico researcher who claims to know why chupacabra sighting are on the rise and why more bodies than ever are being found.
Ben Radford is that man – a local investigator and writer, and the author of 'Tracking the Chupacabra.'
He's fascinated with the people's fascination with chupacabras and has spent years wondering if they are real.
"When people say skeptics are debunkers – that's mean, evil and gloomy. I would love to find chupacabra; I would love to find Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster," Radford said. "If they're out there, I want to be the first person to poke at it and sniff it."
His research is already poking holes in parts of the story.

THE GONZO BLOG DOO-DAH MAN'S DEPUTY IS EATING EGGS
Graham's still on bloggy duties, as Jon and Corinna
are away at present.
The problems of living in such a rural area were
highlighted again yesterday, with a series of electricity supply interruptions
during thunderstorms. It's possible for power companies to make their networks
less prone to surges caused by lightning, but probably such systems are applied
to towns and cities first, and rural areas later - or not at all.
Meanwhile, on the nutrition front (and as I
speculated yesterday) I have indeed preserved my supply of casserole by having
egg sandwiches for breakfast!
And today's musical menu on the Gonzo Blog
