All of the local biologists are saying that what was found in Ratcliffe was a hairless raccoon; however, I believe the evidence points to a hairless white-nosed coati (Nasua narica) or a new, undiscovered subspecies. Even though we live in a developed country, there is a lot of land out there, especially in a state like Texas, for even megafauna to go relatively unnoticed; however, since we are in South Texas, which has one of the highest rates of biodiversity in the United States, finding weird and uncommon animals should not be a surprise.
In an April 7 article, Jackie Stock is quoted saying the animal "has a growl that's not like a raccoon, its eyes don't shine at night, and its feces is also not like a raccoon." Metaphorically speaking, if it sort of looks like a duck and doesn't quack like a duck, it's not a duck but perhaps a cousin of a duck.
Belonging to the same family as the raccoon and with a South American coati cousin, the white-nosed coati is an omnivore that commonly lives in wooded areas of mostly Central America and Mexico. The southern limit of its range stops in Columbia, while the northern limit extends or used to extend into southeastern Arizona, New Mexico, South Texas and the southern half of the Trans Pecos. The majority of the Texas populations most likely died out because of habit fragmentation and destruction from land use and land cover changes taking place over the last 100 to 200 years; however, the post oak savanna of northern South Texas and the current increasing conversion from post oak savanna to post oak woodland in the DeWitt County area to be more specific could have provided favorable conditions for an isolated population to survive and even thrive.

CRYPTOLINK: Did H.R. Giger Invent the Chupacabra?
A word about cryptolinks: we are not responsible for the content of cryptolinks, which are merely links to outside articles that we think are interesting (sometimes for the wrong reasons), usually posted up without any comment whatsoever from me.

Of the famous cryptids, the chupacabra is probably the strangest. But it is also the newest. In fact before 1995, no one had ever actually seen the "goat-sucker". There were reports of something killing farm animals, but nobody had actually laid eyes on one. But did the first eye-witness of the creature lie about what they saw? Furthermore, was the entire thing nothing more than a creation by the recently deceased legendary sci-fi artist H.R. Giger? Well respected skeptic Benjamin Radford believes so.
"HR Giger, famous for creating the Xenomorph in Alien, had designed Sil; the alien has his familiar biomechanical elements grafted onto the body of Natasha Henstridge. And it looks a lot like the chupacabra. Says Radford:
So, just how similar is Sil to the Puerto Rican goatsucker? Well, if Giger were God, his art could have been used as a blueprint for creating the chupacabra. Sketches of the chupacabra’s long, thin fingers and claws appear on page 24; its distinctive spine spikes can be seen on the Species creature on pages 25–29 and throughout the book. In the end, I identified over a dozen morphological similarities. The parallels grow even stronger when we consider Tolentino’s account of the chupacabra’s actions: she described it as hissing – something Sil does in the film – and also leaping fantastic distances with superhuman agility; again, something the Species creature also does.

TODAY'S BIG CAT NEWS
The hunt for British Big Cats attracts far more newspaper-column inches than any other cryptozoological subject.
There are so many of them now that we feel that they should be archived by us in some way, so we are publishing a regular round-up of the stories as they come in.
The worldwide mystery cat phenomenon (or group of phenomena, if we are to be more accurate) is not JUST about cryptozoology. At its most basic level it is about the relationship between our species and various species of larger cat. That is why sometimes you will read stories here that appear to have nothing to do with cryptozoology but have everything to do with human/big cat interaction. As committed Forteans, we believe that until we understand the nature of these interactions, we have no hope of understanding the truth that we are seeking.

FORTEAN BIRD NEWS FROM THE WATCHER OF THE SKIES
What has Corinna's column of fortean bird news got to do with Cryptozoology?
Well, everything actually!
In an article for the first edition of Cryptozoology Bernard Heuvelmans wrote that cryptozoology is the study of 'unexpected animals' and following on from that perfectly reasonable assertion, it seems to us that whereas the study of out-of-place birds may not have the glamour of the hunt for bigfoot or lake monsters, it is still a perfectly valid area for the Fortean zoologist to be interested in.
THE GONZO BLOG DOO-DAH MAN COMPLAINS INCESSANTLY
The Gonzo Daily - Tuesday
A strange day. We have agreed to become foster
parents to one of Beth's rescued hedgehogs which cannot be released. The idea
being to see if we can breed from it and then release the progeny. My nephew
Ross managed to breed them a few years back, and we want to do likewise. Morally
if you take anything from the wild, for whatever reason, you are removing it
from the gene pool, so we hope that by doing this we shall be redressing the
damage. Saskia and Graham are designing the enclosure for it in the most eco
friendly and aesthetically pleasing style as part of Saskia's training course. I
also have the legendary Keith Levene, doing some graphic stuff with me via
Facebook, and several other things all going on at the same time. Who says that
men cannot multitask?

have any news or want to write for us, please contact me at jon@eclipse.co.uk. If you are an artist and
want to showcase your work, or even just say hello please write to me at gonzo@cfz.org.uk. Please copy, paste and
