CRYPTOLINK: Loch Ness Monster: We look back at famous pictures of Nessie on 80th anniversary of 'first ever photo'

It's 80 years to the day since the first known photo claiming to show the Loch Ness monster was taken.
The snap, which appears to show a large marine reptile splashing about in the water, was grabbed by Hugh Gray as he walked along the loch after church on 12 November 1933.
The picture, which we have included in a gallery of famous Nessie images above, has been credited with igniting popular interest and belief in the creature's existence.
This has included the making of Hollywood movies and the extensive searching of the loch by experts for any sign of Nessie.
Several other pictures purporting to show the mystical creature have been taken since Gray's image - each of which has been scoured for clues.
One of these, taken in 1934 supposedly showing the monster, has perhaps come to define Nessy in the public's imagination.

CRYPTOLINK: Stabilized Bigfoot video completely changes the iconic footage

The Patterson-Gimlin film is one of the most endearing pieces of cryptid recording in existence. This shaky bit of film from 1967 was long held up as proof of the existence of Bigfoot, the mythical man-beast that stalked the woodlands. But the footage itself is extremely shaky and low quality. But what happens if you take that footage, and use modern stabilization algorithms on it? It gives a very different picture of the famed clip.
On Reddit, a thread popped up of the Patterson-Gimlin footage stabilized into a GIF, with the discussion then linking to some better quality versions of similar feats. Watching this famously wobbly video in a much more stable manner really does make Bigfoot look less like a fantastic creature, and more like just a person in a suit. FORTEAN BIRD NEWS FROM THE WATCHER OF THE SKIES

In an article for the first edition of Cryptozoology Bernard Heuvelmans wrote that cryptozoology is the study of 'unexpected animals' and following on from that perfectly reasonable assertion, it seems to us that whereas the study of out-of-place birds may not have the glamour of the hunt for bigfoot or lake monsters, it is still a perfectly valid area for the Fortean zoologist to be interested in. So after about six months of regular postings on the main bloggo Corinna took the plunge and started a 'Watcher of the Skies' blog of her own as part of the CFZ Bloggo Network.

TODAY'S BIG CAT ROUND UP



The hunt for British Big Cats attracts far more newspaper-column inches than any other cryptozoological subject. 

 There are so many of them now that we feel that they should be archived by us in some way, so we are publishing a regular round-up of the stories as they come in. 

 The worldwide mystery cat phenomenon (or group of phenomena, if we are to be more accurate) is not JUST about cryptozoology. At its most basic level it is about the relationship between our species and various species of larger cat. That is why, sometimes, you will read stories here which appear to have nothing to do with cryptozoology, but have everything to do with human/big cat interaction. As committed Forteans, we believe that until we understand the nature of these interactions, we have no hope of understanding the truth that we are seeking.

 On this day in 1982 the actress Anne Hathaway, not to be confused with the other Anne Hathaway, was born.
