Kids At Publicly-Funded Texas School Taught That Hitler Based "Master Race" Idea On Theory Of Evolution
Follow us and never miss a story!
By Jonathan Vankin, Mon, October 28, 2013
Though textbook publishers whose books are used in state public schools recently won a battle over whether to include evolution in biology texts, at least one publicly-funded charter school is using a textbook teaching kids that Adolf Hitler got his Nazi master-race beliefs from Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution.
That textbook, paid for with Texas taxpayer dollars, comes from a Christian fundamentalist group which denies that evolution ever happened and believes that the Earth is no more than 6,000 years old.
According to a report in the online magazine Salon, parent Joshua Bass became disturbed when his son, a student at iSchool High School, a charter school in Houston, brought home a textbook with the following passage:
“[Hitler] has written that the Aryan (German) race would be the leader in all human progress. To accomplish that goal, all 'lower races' should either be enslaved or eliminated. Apparently the theory of evolution and its 'survival of the fittest' philosophy had taken root in Hitler's warped mind.”
The phrase “survival of the fittest” was coined by British philosopher Herbert Spencer in 1864. He used it to describe Charles Darwin’s theory of natural selection, which states that life forms that are better adapted to their local environments will survive, while others dies out. This process, according to Darwin, leads species to evolve over time.

TODAY'S BIG CAT ROUND UP
The hunt for British Big Cats attracts far more newspaper-column inches than any other cryptozoological subject. There are so many of them now that we feel that they should be archived by us in some way, so we are publishing a regular round-up of the stories as they come in. In September 2012 Emma Osborne decided that the Mystery Cat Study Group really deserved a blog of its own within the CFZ Blog Network.

The Gonzo Daily - Friday
* The Gonzo Daily is a two way process. If you have any news or want to write for us, please contact me at jon@eclipse.co.uk. If you are an artist and want to showcase your work, or even just say hello please write to me at gonzo@cfz.org.uk. Please copy, paste and spread the word about this magazine as widely as possible. We need people to read us in order to grow, and as soon as it is viable we shall be invading more traditional magaziney areas. Join in the fun, spread the word, and maybe if we all chant loud enough we CAN stop it raining. See you tomorrow...
* The Gonzo Daily is - as the name implies - a daily online magazine (mostly) about artists connected to the Gonzo Multimedia group of companies. But it also has other stuff as and when the editor feels like it. The same team also do a weekly newsletter called - imaginatively - The Gonzo Weekly. Find out about it at this link: www.gonzo-multimedia.blogspot.com/2012/11/all-gonzo-news-wots-fit-to-print.html
I did three interviews yesterday: Dylan
Howe (son of Steve), the son of the notorious King Squealer (who shall remain
nameless for reasons obvious to anyone who has ever read Dan Wooding's excellent
biography of his Papa, and the irrepressable ShiSho - two charming young ladies
from the East Coast of America who sing clever, funny, satirical songs and - to
my jaded point of view - provide much better role models for young women than
Miley Cyrus ever has done.Apart from that, most of the day was spent finishing
the new episode of OTT, which is out this lunchtime. Today I am attempting to
buy a second-hand Mercedes, and waiting for the chimney sweep to arrive. What a
life, eh?

Honest guv!
* Jon Downes, the Editor of all these ventures (and several others) is an old hippy of 54 who - together with his orange cat (who is currently on sick leave in Staffordshire) and two very small kittens (one of whom is also orange) puts it all together from a converted potato shed in a tumbledown cottage deep in rural Devon which he shares with various fish, and sometimes a small Indian frog. He is ably assisted by his lovely wife Corinna, his bulldog/boxer Prudence, his elderly mother-in-law, and a motley collection of social malcontents. Plus.. did we mention the orange cat?

FORTEAN BIRD NEWS FROM THE WATCHER OF THE SKIES
In an article for the first edition of Cryptozoology Bernard Heuvelmans wrote that cryptozoology is the study of 'unexpected animals' and following on from that perfectly reasonable assertion, it seems to us that whereas the study of out-of-place birds may not have the glamour of the hunt for bigfoot or lake monsters, it is still a perfectly valid area for the Fortean zoologist to be interested in. So after about six months of regular postings on the main bloggo Corinna took the plunge and started a 'Watcher of the Skies' blog of her own as part of the CFZ Bloggo Network.

One of the cases that lead to the abolition of the death penalty was the case of Timothy Evans who was hanged for the murder of his wife and baby daughter in 1950. Current thinking is that Evans's family was murdered by serial killer John Reginald Christie in the house they shared in 10 Rillington Place and as that is the crime he was charged for, he should not have been hanged. Anyway, there is an Irish folk song about Timothy Evans; listen to it here:
