FORTEAN BIRD NEWS FROM THE WATCHER OF THE SKIES (CFZ)
In an article for the first edition of Cryptozoology Bernard Heuvelmans wrote that cryptozoology is the study of 'unexpected animals' and following on from that perfectly reasonable assertion, it seems to us that whereas the study of out of place birds may not have the glamour of the hunt for bigfoot or lake monsters, it is still a perfectly valid area for the Fortean zoologist to be interested in. So after about six months of regular postings on the main bloggo Corinna has taken the plunge and started a 'Watcher of the Skies' blog of her own as part of the CFZ Bloggo Network.

I'M YER GONZO BLOG DOO-DAH MAN
Regular readers all will know it,
but on Sundays I become a poet
and just for fun I take the time
and do the Gonzo blogs in rhyme,
but usually I lie in (great)
and hence the blogs are sometimes late
on sundays, but this week you'll find
they've arrived before the usual time
Now I have to play my bugle
cos later this morning Baby Dougal
the son of my friends Graidi and Tim
(and I am ever so fond of him)
is being Christened, (and we'll be there)
I'll wear a tie and brush my hair
and put on socks and not look surly
but that's why the blogs are here so early
So first let's go to Austin Town
where an Aussie poet hangs around
his name is Thom, (or so they say)
we post his poems every day
http://gonzo-multimedia.blogspot.com/2013/02/thom-world-poet-daily-poem_10.html
And now our daily song is here,
from a Welsh rock band that I hold dear
a song to listen to on your own
about why bananas have no bones
http://gonzo-multimedia.blogspot.com/2013/02/the-gonzo-track-of-day-man-bananas.html
And now the Westbrook Trio are here
celebrating their 30th year
of playing Jazz, that's really cool
you know what Mike Westbrook, U RULE!
http://gonzo-multimedia.blogspot.com/2013/02/the-westbrook-trio-three-into-wonderful.html
And now I'll tell you cos I'd better
about the latest Gonzo newsletter
which is full of stuff you'd like to read
at least I think you would indeed

A bloke called Bart sent this to me
about a voyage on the sea
on a cruise ship (nor a floating log)
surrounded by the stars of prog

I am somewhat of an Eric Burdon fan
so I often try to plug the man
who has got out a new CD
which sounds pretty damn good to me

* The Gonzo Daily is a two-way process. If you have any news or want to write for us please contact me at jon@eclipse.co.uk. If you are an artist and want to showcase your work or even just say hello please write to me at gonzo@cfz.org.uk. Please copy, paste and spread the word about this magazine as widely as possible. We need people to read us in order to grow, and as soon as it is viable we shall be invading more traditional magaziney areas. Join in the fun, spread the word, and maybe if we all chant loud enough we CAN stop it raining. See you tomorrow....
* The Gonzo Daily is - as the name implies - a daily online magazine (mostly) about artists connected to the Gonzo Multimedia group of companies. But it also has other stuff as and when the editor feels like it. The same team also do a weekly newsletter called - imaginatively - The Gonzo Weekly. Find out about it at this link: http://gonzo-multimedia.blogspot.com/2012/11/all-gonzo-news-wots-fit-to-print.html
* We should probably mention here that some of our posts are links to things we have found on the internet that we think are of interest. We are not responsible for spelling or factual errors on other people's websites. Honest, guv!
* Jon Downes, the editor of all these ventures (and several others) is an old hippy of 53 who, together with his orange cat, puts it all together from a converted potato shed in a tumbledown cottage deep in rural Devon, which he shares with various fish and batrachians. He is ably assisted by his lovely wife Corinna, his bulldog/boxer Prudence, his elderly mother-in-law and a motley collection of social malcontents. Plus... did we mention the orange cat?
GREAT TITS IN THE WILDLIFE BALCONY GARDEN
A great tit comes for brunchby valiantveggie |
As
mentioned in my previous
post, throughout April and May of 2012 my bird cam
recorded a fair few birds visiting the balcony feeder on an almost daily
basis but didn’t record any visits from them whatsoever from June onwards. I
assumed that their sudden absence tied in with their need for live food such as
caterpillars and beetles ( instead of nuts) for their newly hatched chicks and
so would make a welcome return to my feeder, once again, in the colder winter
months when food was scarcer. From October onwards I would eagerly check my
bird cam, on a daily basis, to see if it had snapped any visiting birds only to
become increasingly disappointed that no photos had been taken whatsoever. It
was great then to come back from work the other evening and to discover that my
bird cam, for the first time since June last year, had actually captured 4
images. I was even more delighted to see that the hungry visitor was a great
tit - a bird which previously hadn't been recorded visiting my balcony.
Hopefully, it might well have noticed one of the bird boxes I'd attached to the
outside of my balcony and decide to raise a family here in the spring. Fingers
crossed! For more information about great tits, and to hear their songs and
calls, check out this page
TODAY'S BIG CAT NEWS
The hunt for British Big Cats attracts far more newspaper-column inches than any other cryptozoological subject. There are so many of them now that we feel that they should be archived by us in some way, so we should have a go at publishing a regular round-up of the stories as they come in. In September 2012 Emma Osborne decided that the Mystery Cat Study Group really deserved a blog of its own within the CFZ Blog Network.
