CARL MARSHALL SETS US A FISHY CONUNDRUM

Here is an unusually marked skin mounted trout. Well, its actually a intergeneric hybrid that is occasionally produced naturally in the wild but more frequently and reliably with intervention by man, they are sterile.

Anyway, I was wondering if any of you guys can guess what it is?

KARL SHUKER: Blue rhinoceros - in quest of the keitloa

During the 1800s, the standard natural history tomes documented a number of intriguing animals that seem to have slipped quietly into obscurity today. One such ex-creature is a mysterious African rhino - the exotic-sounding blue rhinoceros.

CHECK OUT THIS INTERESTING ARTICLE ABOUT THE LOCH OICH MONSTER

received an email from a witness a while back recounting his previously unpublicised story of a sighting in Loch Oich. Since such reports are few and far between, this seemed a good point to first recount the story of the Loch Oich Monster. Or should I say the Loch Ness Monster in Loch Oich for there is little doubt in my mind that any such reports are in fact our own Nessie travelling incognito. My reasoning for this position are four fold:

BIG CAT NEWS: Gloucestershire, Ripon and more...

The hunt for British Big Cats attracts far more newspaper column inches than any other cryptozoological subject.

There are so many of them now that we feel that they should be archived in some way by us, so we should have a go at publishing a regular round-up of the stories as they come in.

It takes a long time to do, and is a fairly tedious task, so I am not promising that they will be done each day, but I will do them as regularly as I can. JD

Big cat's howl heard
This is Gloucestershire

BIG cat believers and deniers have been out in force after an alleged sighting in the Forest. John Powell and his Labrador cross TJ heard a howl and saw green eyes, apparently a cat stalking them in woodland near Ellwood. Big cat tracker Frank...

Big cat DNA tests reveal it's a domestic moggie
This is Gloucestershire

DNA analysis of suspected big cat fur in the county reveals it's from a domestic moggie. University of Warwick, conducted a further test on hair taken from an empty building where a suspected big cat was sighted near Dursley. This is after its experts ...This is Gloucestershire

And once again it all happens in Gloucestershire. A new story for Frank Tunbridge (I really like the cut of this man's jib, and would like to meet him some day) and a disappointing result from some hair analysis. But now over to Yorkshire where, ignoring the fact that someone involved in all this doesn't know the difference between a panther and a puma, there is a very interesting sighting...

It was big, it was black, it had a long tail. WEe've heard that all before, but here another local official admits that these reports are a regular occurrence. And our very own Lindsay Selby comments on the recent Corpach footprints:

NICK REDFERN: When the going gets hot, the squirrels get going (or something like that)

Well, after a week and a half of pneumonia, feeling like hell, dropping 7 pounds, and looking as pale as a ghost, I'm up and running again - which means, of course, more photos from my collection, which varies from the intriguing to the absurd!

I'm not sure where, exactly, this picture fits in. But, what the hell.

ROBERT SCHNECK: Hubcaptivating

An artist turning hubcaps into animal sculptures; you've read that story a hundred times before. They're usually kind of cute and everyone can feel good about recycling. Bradford-based artist, Ptolemy Elrington, however, is doing something rather spectacular. Look at the sinewy lines of his shark, and the Gothic tracery of the owl with BMW eyes. Read more, and see pictures of a dragon, an armadillo, and a hubcap German Shepherd,at: http://www.odditycentral.com/pics/british-artist-turns-lost-hub-caps-into-amazing-animal-sculptures.html

CFZ NEW ZEALAND: Search for the last Kakapo

A Conservation Department (DOC) team flew to Fiordland - the endangered birds' last mainland stronghold - in the hope of finding evidence of their existence in historic breeding areas. The trip was sparked by a credible-sounding report from trampers that the ground-dwelling parrot's distinctive "booming", or mating call, was heard in the remote Transit Valley, near Milford Sound, on New Year's Day.
