Strange Fish Behavior

Masses of fish inexplicably crowded the coast of Acapulco on Friday, packed together so tightly they looked like a living oil slick from above. Some have attributed the mysterious event to changes in currents caused by the tsunami that followed the massive Japan quake. More photos and info at Mail Online.

JOHN HANSON: Nocturnal avian marauder?

I'm sending you this photo taken about a week ago (forget the surface dust on the roof; the marks were fresh). Could it have been a bird such as that an owl dragged its self across the top of the car? My daughter lives in a Birmingham suburb; no owls or birds there, but plenty of vultures!

OLL LEWIS: Yesterday's News Today

On this day in 1796 the first Indian elephant arrived in the USA. Most Americans who saw it were apparently perturbed by the 'odd giraffe' and wanted to send it 'pachyderm' (do-you-see-what-I-did-there?).

And now, the news:

Llamas move fish to cooler waters in Lake District...
Morel Hunters Find Dog Left To Die In Cage
Penguins suffer as Antarctic krill declines

KEN GERHARD WRITES...

Most Texans are now familiar with the weird, dog-like ‘Chupacabras’ that have been turning up around the state over the past seven years; many are unaware that the affair had its origins just south of San Antonio in sleepy Elmendorf. Read on

WOLVES IN PERIL

We need your help for urgent action today. The historic budget deal between House and Senate Republicans and Democrats contains an outright attack on wildlife: a congressional removal of wolves from the endangered species list in Montana and Idaho -- and possibly elsewhere.

If the budget bill passes with this provision intact, it will be the first time in history that politics are allowed to trump science in removing a species from the endangered species list: Wolves would be ineligible to ever again receive federal protection within a vast region, even if their numbers plummeted toward zero. No court would have the authority to stop the ensuing slaughter.

We can't afford to let this happen. Please call and email your U.S. senators and request they sponsor an amendment to the budget to remove the wolf delisting rider -- and commit to voting against any final budget bill that retains this rider. Then, call the White House to request a veto of any budget that includes a rider allowing the extermination of wolves, and call for leadership with the Senate to nix this rider before the budget needs vetoing.
