Over on her blog, Kithra discusses the Torbay sea monster with the calm good sense that she is known for. She also says very nice things about me, and I hope that I have not come over as just a middle-aged, bad-tempered and opinionated man. A WORD TO THE WISE

I always try to be honest with you folk in what I write for the bloggo. I am not at all well at the moment, and Corinna is poorly as well. That is why letters and emails remain unanswered, OTT is still only a third done, and if you have been trying to get hold of either of us since the weekend, you will probably have been spectacularly unsuccesful.

I have every hope that normal service will be resumed as soon as possible, but in the meantime I ask for your forbearance.

UFO investigators and people who track down sightings of strange wild animals will descend on a Devon village for their annual conference next month. The Weird Weekend takes place in Woolfardisworthy, near Crediton, on the weekend of August 13 to 14. During the event authors Mike Williams and Rebecca Lang will unveil their new book, Australian Big Cats: An Unnatural History of Panthers, which speculates about the origins of, and studies the evidence for, big cats Down Under.

On this day in 2002 Carmen Silvera died. Silvera is best known for her portrayal of Edith Artois in Allo Allo, a comedy which just so happens to be the funniest show the BBC have ever created.

(Note for fact fans: the accordion in the Allo Allo theme tune was actually played by Michael Jackson, of Thriller and Smooth Criminal fame who was a big fan of Lloyd's previous project Captain Beaky & His Band (Not Forgetting Hissing Sid!!!) under the condition that his involvement was kept secret)
